Rose McQuinn, out walking near her home on Arthur’s Seat comes across the body of a woman in the ruins of St Anthony’s Chapel but when she returns to the scene of the crime, neither body nor the local constable whom she alerted have both disappeared. I find the Rose McQuinn mysteries to be very entertaining. Author Alanna Knight does a good job of making the characters and dialogue real and interesting. The look that one gets into life in Edinburgh during the Victorian era is also quite interesting.While out for a stroll one morning Rose discovers the body of a dead woman. She reports it to a nearby constable but later she finds that the body and the constable have vanished. No one believes her and so she is determined to solve the mystery herself. Ms Knight then does a good job of putting minor mysteries in the story to keep the reader wondering along with the suspense of the main murder mystery. Why is her vagabond friend, Rory, estranged from his son? Where are these other woman who have disappeared and may be the murder victim? All will be revealed. Hopefully.
I am usually a few pages ahead of Rose in determining who the prime suspect is. How can she not see it? But then, when she does get on his trail, I find that I am wrong. That makes for a great mystery novel as does the surprise ending and Rose's handling of the situation.

I like Alanna Knight. She is an easy and entertaining read. If you like Victorian mysteries she is quite good.
I have read every book in this series and thoroughly enjoyed each one. More please! Rose is a pleasure to follow.
While entertaining to read on a rainy afternoon, the story was somewhat predictable.
This was a very pleasant book, with a few surprising twists and turns, interesting characters and a lot of nice language.
It is not the best mystery I have ever read, but it was entertaining. Ms. Knight does seem to have done her research into the time period.
I enjoy the Rose McQuinn mysteries--I am a little dubious about the dog that comes & goes, but the stories are fairly good. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery.
After I read the Inspector's daughter I started straight onto this book and was not disappointed, I think it is actually better than the first Rose McQuinn story. The quirky characters are interesting and believable, the main charters likable and you find yourself hoping the best for them, and this is a good testament to Ms Knight's story telling skills. I hope the following books will be as enjoyable. If you enjoy an easy mystery read in a historical context I recommend this book.
